The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has conducted the first-ever analysis of Albania's environment. The analysis shows that five sites in Albania are serious environmental threats. One of the most hazardous sites is in Albania's biggest port, Durres, where a large area is severely contaminated by hazardous chemicals. UNEP says that the country lacks adequate hazardous waste facilities.

The World Health Organisation and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) have announced a joint initiative to cut global deaths from measles by half till 2005. Virologists recently warned that measles could stage a deadly comeback if more children were not vaccinated soon. The new effort -- the Global Measles Strategic Plan -- will provide vaccinations, establish an effective monitoring and surveillance system and improve management of complicated measle cases. There are over 30 million cases of the disease reported every year, out of which at least 900,000 die annually.
