Zooms may soon be out of the picture. At least 5 Japanese companies are close to developing a filrsmart enough to do a zoom's job (New SciennVol 143, No 1941).

The Dew film, detaile cc which are a closely guardc secret, will be coated magnetic material that ca store information such a, the shutter speed, aper and focal length of a len This information can the be read by an automatic printer when the film processed.

The system gives a tographer the option of 11 pseudo-zooming" by recording on the film a longer focal length than of the lens used. Durinc processing, the printer automatically enlarge the central part of the image The only disadvantage that enlarging the print makes the image more grainy.
