A division bench of the Gujarat High Court has issued notices to the state government, the Gandhinagar district collector and the managing collector of the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Corporation seeking to show cause as to why a public interest litigation filed by the Jan Sangharsh Manch, a local organisation, in connection with the death of 23 people in flood waters of Sabarmati should not be admitted. Appearing for the petitioners, Mahesh Bhatt and Mukul Sinha said that the disaster that hit 13 families was an avoidable incident. They said that the facts establish that an earthen dam built across the Sabarmati near Bhat village, situated around 600 metres from huts, was the primary cause for the disaster.
