Penguins Germany
Gay rights activists are outraged at a German zoo's plans to test the sexual orientation of six male penguins which have displayed homosexual traits. The male penguins at Bremerhaven's Zoo am Meer have been observed trying to mate with each other and attempting to hatch offspring out of stones. "We don't know whether the male pairs are really homosexual or if they have just bonded because of a shortage of females," said Zoo director Heike Kueck. Last month, the zoo stated it would introduce four extra female penguins to the group to see if the males really were gay. "Gay rights groups worldwide have been cursing ever since," says Kueck. Gay groups insist that penguins had a right to form couples without any human interference.
