The Supreme Court has asked Uttar Pradesh to identify appropriate land to set up oxidation plants to treat sewage before being discharged into the river. The areas are to be identified at Lakhimpur, Jaunpur and Barabanki by December 7, 2001. The order was passed after the standing counsel for the state government informed the court that land had been identified in the towns of Pilibhit, Sitapur and Sultanpur. The next hearing of the case will be held on January 7, 2002.
