Tractors and Farm Equipment Limited, Chennai, has launched a high yielding rice variety, called 'super ponni' -- J18. S S Nagarajan, associate vice president (agri-research) of the company, says that the new variety has been developed from a pure fine variety brought in from Manila. The rice is not susceptible to any of the major pests and diseases that affect other paddy varieties. It can produce nearly 3.7 tonnes of paddy per ha. If farmers invest Rs 10,000 for cultivating the new variety in one ha, they can earn a net profit of Rs 22,000, he says.
