The Madras High Court has held the state government responsible for not making sincere efforts to prevent deforestation. The Court directed to set up a Special Task Committee. Justice E Padmanabhan said it is evident from the records produced in the Court that there has been a substantial rise in unauthorised felling and smuggling of sandalwood trees. Only 10 per cent of the cases were registered and 90 per cent of the cases were not brought to book.
