In a field, a sinewy man bends at the waist, slicing stalks of wheat with a small machete. A mother gently places her infant son, slung in a piece of blue fabric, onto a vegetable scale housed in a makeshift clinic. Two girls walk to school.
These images are interspersed with grim statistics: Forty-eight per cent of Bangladeshi children under five are malnourished. One-third of the country’s child morality is a result of severe malnou - rishment. The photo documentary, Bangladesh: Terrifying Normalcy, is the work of US photojournalist Ron Haviv.
He spent two weeks on the Bangladesh island of Bhola documenting acute malnutrition in mothers and children. The exhibition at Brooklyn’s VII art gallery will be on till July first week.
