A solar-powered water pasteurising device called Solsaver, designed by John Grandinetti, president of Grand Solar Incorporated of Hawaii, USA, may bring an end to people falling prey to water-borne diseases (World Watch, VoJ8, No 5).

The Solsaver uses thermal action to move the water which flows through copper tubing into a glass solar collector for heating, and is let out through a valve which opens when water reaches a temperature of 65C. Awaiting field trials, Sol- saver comes in various sizes, with the smallest providing roughly 1361itre (I) of pasteurised water per sunny day, and the largest yielding 1,091 l.
