THE men in uniform have found a n&
vocation: that of taking care of the
environment. The army unit stationed
at Madras - in their bid to green the
city - is setting up a 'zodiacal park' at
the local Island Grounds.
Traditionally used as a logistical
base for army material, vehicles and
men, the sprawling Island Grounds
spread over more than 100 acres will
now be converted into a wooded park.
The theme of the park centres arounc
the zodiacal signs and will contain plants which relate to the signs. The
underlying message to the citizens is
"whatever be your particular zodiac
sign, come and plant a tree associatec with it".
The army is willing to take care of
the planted saplings. Work has alreact
begun at the Grounds; facilities such as
a jogging track amidst the trees, a pond
and a sanctuary are the other planned
attractions. The park will be open tc
dedicated greens on the lines of a limited membership availability.
