In a statement, members of the Indian Medical Association have urged the government to take immediate measures to control particulate emissions from diesel vehicles in the country.

The Chaliyar Action Council has approached the National Human Rights Commission urging it to undertake a comprehensive investigation into the denial of right to life and livelihood of the people due to emissions from a polluting industry located on the banks of Chaliyar river in Kerala's Kozhikode district.

India can afford to smile a bit for managing to enter the medium human development category of the human development index with a rank of 132 from among 174 nations of the world. However, the formula for computing the index has been changed to reduce disparities, especially in the income data.

An oral health care programme has been launched in the rural areas of Haryana by the state health department. About 100 dental clinics have been set up in these areas. A spokesperson of the department said that more than 90 per cent of India's population above 30 years of age were affected by periodontal diseases.
