Deforestation Philippines
A radio presenter from northeastern Manila, Philippines, Joey Estriber, who condemned uncontrolled deforestation that caused the recent tragic landslides in the Philippines, was kidnapped on March 3, 2006.
Estriber is a regular speaker against deforestation in the Aurora province. Estriber, who anchors a programme the "Pag-usapan Natin" (Let's talk about that) on local radio dzjo, was abducted by four men in front of a cybercaf in Baler, Aurora province.
In his programme, he complained about the severe logging of trees carried out by companies, which do so with enough backing from the administration as well. He also participated in a campaign for the suspension of nine licences, which were granted to logging companies in the province.
Though a landslide in the Aurora region left more than 100 dead in 2004, logging has managed to continue unabated. Estriber is also one of the prime movers of the ngo Bataris which works for local development.
