Avantika Sanghi's trip to Manali and Rohtang yielded nothing but eyesores: a maze of buildings casting a shadow over its green ambience, and mounds of polythene carrybags smudging the idyllic surroundings. The Delhi university student gave vent to her disappointment by writing a letter to the Himachal Pradesh High Court.
The court found substance in Sanghi's contention. Consequently, a division bench comprising Chief Justice W A Shishak and Justice L S Panta treated her letter as a petition. The court issued notices to the secretary, forest and environment, Union government and the state chief secretary asking them to file a reply soon.
