Green funds

I AM writing on behalf of the Environmental Monitoring Group, a non-governmental organisation based in South Africa.

We are exploring the possibility of setting up an environmentally-concerned trust fund -- the first of its kind in South Africa. This project is still very much in the planning stages, and we are looking for information on how to run such funds. In particular, we are trying to contact already existing organisations which run environmental trusts in the hope that they will be able to give us some assistance.

Down to Earth (October 15, 1994) contains a short article on green funds -- Dilemma of Green Funding appeared in the World News section. It mentioned the names of several British environmental investment companies. We would like to know their addresses so that we could contact them.

Peoples' participation

We at Gram Vikas were very happy to see the report on the Rural Health and Environment Programme (Down to Earth, September 30, 1994). We think the article is a good representation of people's involvement in the programme.

The people of Gouditikra were proud that their village was taken as a case study for the article. As the villagers were unable to read the article in English, they made a boy from the village read the article out in Telegu for them. Other villages participating in the programme have also been told about the article. ...

Trust Sukhomajri

I am working on a watershed development project in the Nanded district of Maharashtra with an NGO, the Socio Economic Development Trust.

We are regular subscribers of Down to Earth. In the February 15, 1994 issue, there was an article on Sukhomajri. We would like to know more about Sukhomajri -- its forest laws, rules, regulations, methodology and the approach of the Hill Resource Management Trust (HRMS), etc.

Please send us the detailed postal address of the HRMS along with the names of the contact persons as early as possible. VASANT SHENDYE Socio Economic Development Trust Dreamland Post Kerwadi Palam Parbhani-431 720 Maharashtra

The HRMS is a society formed by the villagers and the forest department. You could get in touch with:
