Seconding the proposal

This has reference to the letter by K V Nand of Nagothane in your magazine (Vol 4, No 7). 1 agree with him regarding the celebration of National Environment Day on December 4, the date of the Bhopal tragedy. This date would be appropriate as it will not only remind us of the consequences of apathy towards environmental issues, but also give a chance to schoolchildren to participate in this event as in June, most of the schools across the country are closed for summer vacation. ...

Campaigning for sustainability

I would like to share some of my views in response to the news clipping under the "Campaign" section (Vol 4, No 6). 1 see the act of bringing a proposal like "lease out degraded forest lands to industry for captive plantations" as a power-hun ry political move. I believe our policy makers in the government are well aware of the state of the Indian forests. which are decaying day-by-day due to internal and external pressures. At this juncture, the proposal is a thoughtless venture and may lead to disastrous consequences.

Any kind of development programme should be linked with and aimed at environmental safety. The crux of the problem ties in the government's policy of maximising resource use rather than ensuring sustainable use. It is the people, not the government or the industry, who should decide about it by accepting the fact that industrial survival is necessary for the progress and development of a nation.

Hence, the government should see and strike a balance between plheservation and milisation on the basis of people's opinions and then take a policy decision to implement the same. We should remember that natural resources are permanent assets of the whole humankind and we should not exhaust them in one generation. ...
