London’s Tate Modern is to host a series of blackouts during which the public can explore the museum by torchlight. As part of the London 2012 festival to celebrate the Olympic Games, Scandinavian artist Olafur Eliasson has created a portable solar-powered torch. The blackouts will take place over four weeks from July 28.
Dubbed “Little Sun”, the sun-shaped torch has been mass produced in China and will be distributed in developing countries at a heavily discounted price. It has been designed to bring light to the 1.6 billion people without direct access to electricity.
