Live storage in India’s reservoirs increased marginally within the last week despite recording deficit rainfall in seven states. The southwest monsoon rainfall patterns vastly varied across the country, according to the India Meteorological Department.
Live storage in India’s 143 reservoirs is 129 per cent of the live storage of the corresponding period of last year. It accounts for 125 per cent of the average storage over the last 10 years, the Central Water Commission (CWC) said August 25, 2022.
The current storage has reached 82 per cent of its capacity, against 76 per cent and 67 per cent August 18 and August 11, respectively.
The live storage of the reservoirs August 25 was 144.969 billion cubic metres (BCM). The storage August 18 was 135.043 BCM and on August 11 and August 4, it stood at 118.702 BCM and 107. 232 respectively.
Better-than-normal storage is available in the Subarnarekha, Indus, Mahi, Sabarmati, Narmada, Tapi, Rivers of Kutch, Godavari, Krishna, Mahanadi, Cauvery, etc.
Close to normal storage is available in the Ganga, stated the CWC bulletin. Some 15 states have better storage than last year for the corresponding period, according to CWC.
They include Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Odisha, Tripura, Nagaland, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Kerala and a few other states.
Six states have lesser storage than last year for the corresponding period. They are Jharkhand, West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Andhra Pradesh.
The number of reservoirs with storage more than last year is 106 and reservoirs having storage more than average for the last 10 years are 116.
The number of reservoirs with storage less than or equal to 20 per cent with respect to last year is three and the number having storage less than or equal to 20 per cent with reference to the average of the last 10 years is one.
