MATERNAL MORTALITY

Speaking at an orientation workshop on 'State of the World's Newborns: Pakistan' in Peshawar, Nabeela Ali, programme manager of Save the Children, USA, said, "Pakistan has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the region and the hospital data suggests that it has not declined in the last 40 years." Lamenting the child mortality situation in Pakistan, Bruce Rasmussem, field director, Pakistan, says about five million children die every year in the country.
