Minning Banned

The Bombay High Court has stayed Indian Aluminium Company Ltd (Indal) from continuing its bauxite mining operations in the Iderganj reserved forest area near Kolhapur. The company has also been ordered to stop cutting and building a six kilometres feeder road in the mining area. The order has come in the wake of a public interest petition by the Bombay Environmental Action Group (BEAG). It has alleged that the mining lease is situated within the Radhanagari wildlife sanctuary. A division bench comprising chief justice M B Shah and justice A Y Sakhre has taken this decision. Indal's bauxite mining operations in the 285 hectares Durgamanwadi area had also been challenged earlier.
