sparkling green: Now, Americans will be able to wash their dishes clean in a green way, thanks to an eco-friendly dishwasher launched by Bosch-Siemens Hausgerate of Germany. The company will build a factory in North Carolina, US, to produce dishwashers that promise to save water and energy. The plant will be the first in the US to use 'hi-tech low-pollution' European technology in the US, the company claimed. The green dishwashers are likely to cost about US $500. The joint venture company is the world's fifth largest maker of white goods.

net on tube: The Internet is now within the reach of even those who do not own a computer and telephone. Mohan Tambe, a Bangalore-based engineer, has developed a device which can connect a user to the worldwide information network through a TV set. The data will be provided through the existing cable television network. A user will have to pay around Rs 6,000 to get the gadget installed on a TV set. It consists of a TV choicer pad which is smaller than a video cassette recorder. The new technology will be introduced first in Bangalore and later in other cities.

beastly business: Merck & Co Inc, a pharmaceutical firm of US and Rhone-Poulenc SA, a French drug company have tied up to form the world's largest animal-health company. The 50-50 joint venture will be known as Merial Animal Health. The companies were already leading in the worldwide animal-health and poultry-genetics markets. The combined revenues of the two companies from animal-health business are estimated to be around US $1.7 billion this year.

drink in health: A new range of herbal tea has been launched in India by Ajanta Pharma Ltd of Mumbai. The herbal teas can not only be taken as a refreshing beverage but also as a cure for several health problems. The range includes Keep Fit Tea for general well being, Liv Tone Tea for the liver and Move Free Tea for arthritis. The company will also launch a sleep-inducing Good Night Tea and Fresh Breath Tea as breath freshner. The company is planning to develop several other ayurvedic products for Indian as well as international markets.

bio weapon: Cardiff Chemicals, a research laboratory in the UK has entered into a technology tie-up with the Hyderabad-based Fortune Biotech Ltd (FBL) to produce a neem-based pesticide. Named Agadirachtin, the pesticide can destroy about 300 types of insects. It has been approved by US patent autho-rities and would be produced in FBL's plant in Raigir, Andhra Pradesh, which has an annual capacity of 10 tonnes. The product has a shelf-life of two years and will be primarily marketed abroad.

breaking new grounds: Teva Pharmaceuticals of Israel is all set to make its mark in the European drug market by launching its multiple sclerosis medicine, Copaxone. The drug will be marketed initially in the UK and in rest of Europe within six months. It has already been launched in Israel and approved by the US Food and Drug authorities. Copaxone is effective in slowing the progression of the disease. There are an estimated one million multiple sclerosis patients worldwide, of whom 30,000 are in the US and Europe. Sales of the drug in the US are expected to bring the company revenues of US $100 million.
