The US Court of Federal Claims has ruled that 1.1 million hectares of Texas forest was illegally taken away by European settlers from Coushatta Indians and other tribes of Alabama. The ruling stipulates that the federal government has to pay millions of dollars as compensation to the tribe. Patricia Weiss, lawyer for the justice department said that the depart-ment is reviewing the ruling and has not decided whether to appeal against it.
