the much-talked about phenomenon of global warming was in the news recently following an unusual experiment. The British scientific weekly Nature reported that scientists from the University of Michigan and the University of Western Ontario, using hundreds of boreholes, found that heat radiates from the Earth's molten core towards the planet's surface. This process also worked in reverse.
The scientists found that it takes about 100 years for the heat change to reach a depth of 150 metres and about 1,000 years to reach 500 metres. They then built up a database of temperatures taken at 10-metre intervals at 616 boreholes around the world. They found that the atmospheric temperature had risen by 1 c in the last 500 years -- about half of which occurred in the 20th century when industrialisation galloped ahead.
