>> The BBC Hindi radio service won a temporary reprieve after a high-profile campaign opposing plans to end their transmissions.

It has agreed to keep a one-hour evening broadcast in Hindi for another year. The campaign was supported by writers such as Arundhati Roy, Vikram Seth and broadcaster Mark Tully. Campaigners said BBC Hindi broadcasts, which were scheduled to end on March 31, have 10 million listeners, many of them in rural areas.

>> The social networking site Facebook is launching a system that allows users to report friends who they think may be contemplating suicide. The feature is being run in conjunction with the UK charity Samaritans, which said several people had used it during a test phase. Anyone worried about a friend can fill out a form which is passed to the site’s moderators.
