The Maharashtra government has ordered the National Thermal Power Corporation (ntpc) to cease work on its 1,000 MW power project at Mouda in Nagpur district.
The ntpc had ignored several notices from the state asking it to frame a comprehensive rehabilitation scheme and get it cleared by the Maharashtra State Rehabilita-tion Authority. As per the rehabilitation guidelines, ntpc was to submit a village-wise list of affected families, conduct environmental and social impact assessments, and establish a grievance redressal mechanism when work started in 2007. Legislative Assembly member from Kamptee in Nagpur, Chandra-shekhar Bawankule, said he would file a police complaint against ntpc officials unless they paid Rs 20 lakh and an ex-gratia amount to each family in the 12 affected villages. He demanded developed land to resettle each family.
