Useful Information

If you are a conservation planner or a researcher looking for information on natural resources, log on to ecoinfoindia.org. The website is a part of India's first eco-informatics centre, developed at Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment, in collaboration with the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore and the US-based software major, Hewlett-Packard. The site brings together a lot of information and databases on conservation and management of biological resources and facilitates their access through the web enabled geographic information systems.

And that is not all. The website provides access to remote databases, that are constantly updated, under three broad categories: ecological, biophysical and socio-economic. The user can thus graphically integrate socio-economic information with biological and/or biophysical information. WhyWhere facility on the portal allows a user to locate the distribution of a particular species.

At present, the site focuses predominantly on plant and animal species in the Western Ghats, but there are plans to include species from the entire country in future. The portal also plans to provide access to most of the published information about the species' current distribution. So, if you have an avid interest in flora and fauna, log on to this site.
