Organic route

cashew farmers in Kerala are a hapless lot. They are dogged by the falling prices of their produce and stiff competition caused by the wto regime. However, there is hope in going organic.

This has been stated in a study prepared by M Abdul Salam, the head of the Cashew Research Station of the Kerala Agricultural University, Madakkathra. The study has a special significance in the context of the recommendations of the government committee to exercise restraint in spraying endosulfan, a pesticide, on the cashew crops of Kasargod district in Kerala.

Salam's study tries to evolve a package of practice for the production of organic cashew. While giving details of pest management organically in cashew crops, the study points out that pineapple is the most profitable intercrop in cashew plantation.
