By handing its forests over to the people, Nepal has shown that the best protector of the woods are those who use them instead of those who guard them with guns. A recent estimate shows that more than a third of Nepal -- some 5.5 million ha -- is under green cover. The World Bank's prediction in 1976 that within 20 years time Nepal's forest cover would completely dwindle, has been disproved by the country.
