Accidents in inland waterways

The National Green Tribunal (NGT), July 27 2022 directed the Inland Waterways Authority of India, Syamaprasad Mookerjee Port and the transport department of West Bengal to file a standard operating procedure with regard to the prevention of accidents on the inland waterways before September 13, 2022.

The application was filed by Dakshin Banga Matsyajibi Forum, an organisation working on issues of small-scale fishing communities. The illegal activities have violated the Central Pollution Control Board guidelines and have disturbed the riverine ecology, stated NGT.

Brick kilns in Punjab 

Brick kilns in Pathankot, Punjab, have procured valid consents from the Punjab Pollution Control Board, stated a joint committee report. All 17 kilns operating in Pathankot have adopted induced draft technology with a zig-zag setting. 

Further, all the 17 brick kilns have obtained the license to produce and sell bricks from the Department of Food and Civil Supplies. Out of 18 brick kilns, one of the brick kilns in Jangal village has been closed down and the remaining 17 brick kilns are temporarily not in operation due to monsoon, stated the report.

Pollution of Retteri lake, Chennai

Steps are being taken to prevent waste discharge into Retteri lake, Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board stated in its report to NGT.

The report filed, July 25, 2022, was in response to a suo moto petition based on a news item that appeared in Dinamalar, a newspaper. No sewage was going out into the Vinayagapuram drain and Korattur surplus canal from the surrounding streets, stated the report.
