imageThere’s bad news for many cash-starved book lovers. Download portal Library.nu and cyberlocker ifile.it shut down “voluntarily” after publishers managed to get an injunction against the two sites.

In early February, users of Library.nu noticed the site no longer carried links to files. On February 15, the site began redirecting to Google books. A statement by a coalition of the world’s largest publishers, including Cambridge University Press, Harper Collins, Elsevier and John Wiley & Sons, cleared the doubts. It said the sites were operating an unauthorised “internet library” that made available more than 400,000 high quality e-books. In addition, they made $11 million in revenue. The regional court in Munich agreed.

“This is an important step towards transparent, honest and fair trade of digital content on the Internet,” says Stephen M Smith, president and CEO of the publisher John Wiley and Sons.
