Movie>> Cultural Bias • Italy
The release of unofficial posters of the movie 12 Years a Slave by its Italian distributor BiM Distribuzione has received severe criticism in the social media. Reason: the film stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, a British national born to Nigerian parents, in the lead and Michael Fassbender and Brad Pitt in minor roles, but the posters released in Italy to advertise the movie focus only on Fassbender and Pitt. Responding to the criticism, sales agent for the movie, Lionsgate’s Summit, said the posters were not authorised or approved by the producers. BiM Distribuzione has apologised for the posters and said that “all inappropriate materials” have been withdrawn.
Pitt is one of the producers of the movie, which has been directed by Britain’s Steve McQueen and is based on the true story of a man who was kidnapped and sold as a slave in 1841. The movie is scheduled for a February release in Italy.
