Water is being rationed in Sao Paulo -- South America's largest urban area -- in a bid to make it through what some meteorologists say is the area's worst drought situation in this century. The rationing of water will continue for the next six months.
As a result of this measure, at least three million people in Sao Paulo will have to make do without running water for 24 hours every third day as the water company cuts off supply. A business mecca that contributes at least a quarter of Brazil's gross domestic product, Sao Paulo's present water crisis will hit the rich and the poor alike.
Meanwhile, the city's administration has been largely blamed for failing to install sufficient waterworks. There has also been widespread criticism of the residents for wasting water.
