The Supreme Court has issued orders that the environment of the Narayan Sarovar Sanctuary in Kachchha, Gujarat, home to the endangered chinkara (gazelle), will be regularly monitored by a committee of experts headed by a retired judge of the Gujarat high court. Turning down an appeal by the state government to reduce the area of the sanctuary, the court directed the government to take adequate steps for controlling pollution in the area.
