Climate Change UK
Fears that the forthcomng g8 summit in Gleneagles, uk will lack the political will to tackle global warming have increased, following the leak of a document purporting to be a draft g8 communiqu on climate change. The uk- based pressure group Friends of the Earth International said that the document is far too weak, ineffective and lacks urgency.
The 15-page draft begins by stressing the need for urgent action on everything from developing new technologies, cleaner engines, energy efficiency and insulating buildings to capturing greenhouse gases. But there are no targets for cutting the emission of climate-warming gases and a section on the scientific basis for climate change is left blank. "This is obviously due to us blocking," says Katherine Pearce of Friends of the Earth. The uk's department of environment declined to comment on the leaked draft.
