Sign in and petition

Need support for your opinion on an issue, but can't go around seeking signatures and supporters? Log on to jantaraj, petition online and get friends for your cause. This website wants to be the "online voice of the people of India" by taking their signatures on petitions they themselves have created. You can design your own petition pages, search for petitions created by others and mail petitions to others for their signatures and response. A database of elected representatives allows petitioners to target their petitions to select political leaders. The website doesn't condemn or support the views in the petitions; it just gives them a platform.

In a 2-MB space, the website's 'premium users' can keep files, images and documents related to your petitions. You can download the signatures and take help in managing petitions.

Jantaraj's inspiration for design and strategy seems to come from US-based websites and, which act as "desktop democracy" advocates.

Jantaraj says it is targeted at social and political activists, non-government and non-profit organisations and civic-minded citizens. "Public opinion is one of the most powerful and effective weapons of democracy. It is the force, which can determine and alter the course of a nation and its future," says this website. That weapon can now be attached to an e-mail.
