Autorickshaw Sri Lanka
The ubiquitous autorickshaw in many places of Sri Lanka has been transformed into an e-tuk tuk -- a complete radio station and multimedia centre. The vehicle also allows Internet access even in the remotest villages and takes digital photographs.
The tuk tuks are part of the Kothmale Community Radio and Multimedia centre. The tuk tuk's transmitter is a vintage 50 watt fm exciter. It's too big to fit anywhere except on the rooftop rack. This is a worry for the Kothmale station -- you don't carry sensitive equipment on an exposed rack in the monsoon -- and they are raising funds to buy a sleeker model. But many are also upbeat."With this tuk tuk, you've got a great vehicle to go out to communities to let people speak through their radio stations," says Steve Buckle, president of the Association of Community Radio Broadcasters.
