STOP FELLING OF TREES

Published: Sunday 15 November 1998

A division bench of the Kerala high court has directed the state government to issue guidelines on felling of trees from the forests. The bench noted that loss of trees in the forests would permanently damage the eco-system and, hence, could not be compensated in terms of money. The court said that the authorities should ensure that not a single tree, which can survive natural disease, is felled. The court was giving directions on a petition filed by the Nature Lovers Movement (NLM), Thiruvamkulam. NLM said that despite the high court order, the forest department was allowing large scale felling of trees in the forest area.
