Down To Earth Editor Sunita Narain has been named the ‘national climate leader’ from India for 2019 in the first National Climate Leader Awards published in the Global Spotlight Report #22 released by Climate Scorecard.

The Delhi-based environmentalist and author is also the director general of non-profit Centre for Science and Environment (CSE).

Climate Scorecard is a non-profit that seeks to strengthen emission reduction pledges to the Paris Agreement by leading greenhouse gas emitting countries.

The list released January 2, 2019 covers 22 greenhouse gas-emitting countries, including India, Australia, Canada, Germany and China. It recognises scholars, researchers, political leaders and young climate change activists for their work to prevent climate crisis.

Other recipients include Canada’s environment and climate change minister Jonathan Wilkinson, Potsdam Institute for Climate Science Director Ottmar Edenhofer and Indonesia’s forestry and environment minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar.

“Narain plays an active role in policy formulation on issues of environment and development in India and globally. She has been appreciated for her efforts in combating climate change conjoined with evidence based research in working with businesses and multi-stakeholders,” the report wrote.

It underscored her position that action by stakeholders must be well thought through to avoid affecting people and the planet.

In 2019, Narain was named as one of the 15 leading women fighting climate change by the Time magazine. Earlier, in 2016, it listed her among the 100 most influential people globally.

CSE, led by her, was awarded the prestigious Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development for 2018 for its pioneering work on environment and sustainable development. “We have to make a difference in this climate change-risked and insecure world” she said while receiving the award from former vice-president Hamid Ansari.
