Traffic signal goes green

A new, innovative traffic light that lasts much longer than traditional ones and has better energy efficiency and almost no operation and maintenance cost has been developed by a Danish firm, Technical Traffic Solution A/AS. The traffic light has even picked up one of the European Union's product awards for sustainable development for this year. It has a lifetime of 10 years -- much more than the conventional traffic bulbs that have a life of only 11 months.

What made the device eligible for the prize was the use of environmentally sound processes in its production. The material used for the production of this light-emitting diode-based traffic signal is ecofriendly aluminium. Besides, the signal has been designed in such a way that there will be no need for regularly cleaning light lenses. This, together with longer life of the lights, makes the new traffic signals practically maintenance free.
