Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) recently developed a hightech railway locomotive compatible both in the AC and DC modes. The only one of its kind in India, the locomotive has a capacity of 5,000 horsepowers (hp) in the AC mode and 4,600 hp in the DC mode. Said T S Nanda, general manager of the Jhansi unit ofBHEL, where the locomotive was developed, "It will run in AC mode in the normal case and on reaching the Mumbai region where only DC supply line exists, it will run on the DC modes".
