Development Programme (UNDP) will provide assistance worth US $2.55 million to India for large-scale adoption of high-yielding hybrid rice technology. The initiative is part of the Food Security Program under the UNDP-supported Country Cooperation Framework for India for the period 1997-2002. According to recent estimates, to ensure food security at the household and the community level in India, about 25 per cent more rice needs to be added to the national food basket within the next eight years.
Klaus Toepfer, executive director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), has called for support from governments, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and industry to tackle issues that affect the global environment. He was addressing a meeting of the organisation's governing council at the UNEP headquaters in Nairobi, Kenya. The council meeting was also attended by dia's minister of state for environment Babu Lal Marandi and government representatives from around the world. Toepfer said, "The vision requires adequate financial funding and, most importantly, a strong backing, cooperation from environment ministers, NGOs, and industrial houses."
