After a dramatic decline in population in the last decade, vultures are increasing in Nepal. A study by the Bird Conservation Nepal (bcn) says vulture nests have doubled in number in a year since the vulture feeding centres were initiated in the region (see 'Bon apptit', Down To Earth, April 30, 2007). There are more than 30 vulture nests in the Narayani Chitwan National Park Buffer Zone Area, Nawalparasi district; this was just 17 in 2006.
The community-managed Jatayu feeding grounds have been giving diclofenac-free carcasses to vultures. The study says the amount of harmful non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs which get into vultures through the carcasses they feed on has significantly dropped.
