Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (npcil), Mumbai, recently paid Rs 7.10 crore as water cess to the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (mpcb). mpcb had issued a show cause notice to npcil in September 2005, for non-payment of cess worth Rs 32.67 crore since 1982 (see 'Cess mess at Tarapur', Down To Earth, October 15, 2005). npcil also refused to pay the due cess amount prior to 1987. D B Boralkar, member secretary, mpcb said, " npci l has paid up cess since April 1993 but hasn't for the period between 1982-93. npcil has appealed the government waive off that amount and demanded exemption from the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Cess Act, 1977.
