Nandigram in West Bengal continues to witness sporadic outbreaks of violence between anti- and pro-land acquisition forces. On April 29, one
person was killed and two others injured in clashes between ruling CPI-M activists and members of the anti-land acquisition Bhumi Uchchhed
Pratirodh Committee (BUPC). While police say one person was shot dead and two others received bullet injuries, BUPC activists claim two of their
people were killed and four others injured in the clashes. CPI-M activists, meanwhile, say two of their supporters were killed and six others injured by
Trinamul Congress cadres. Violence between the warring groups has become a regular occurrence even though the state has rolled back its plan to
build a chemical hub. The Calcutta High Court on May 3 observed that the people were being denied their fundamental rights and directed the state
government to ensure normal life in the area.
