according to a survey on urban garbage sponsored by the Assam Science Technology and Environment Council ( astec ), Guwahati generates about 184 tonnes of municipal waste everyday. This could be a conservative estimate as the survey does not take into account the 120 hand carts that service the bylanes. Mahfuza Rahman, who is conducting the survey said that a major portion of the domestic waste such as paper, glass, metal and plastic, account for only a small proportion of the refuse since scavengers collect these items directly from the households. A major threat to the cleanliness and hygiene of the city is the growing use of plastics. Clogging in the drains due to plastic disposal are breeding grounds for deadly germs.
The existing method of disposal of solid wastes in the city, the report said, was "a jerky and scattered journey of waste from the bins to the dumping ground".
