the 'Vienna Climate Change Talks 2007' were held in Austria from August 27-31. The meet focused on the analysis of
mitigation potential and possible ranges of emission reductions for Annex I parties (developed countries) after 2012. The meet saw two
groups--fourth session of the Ad Hoc Working and Convention Dialogue--discuss various aspects of climate change.
The fourth session of the Ad Hoc Working Group took note of information from the fourth assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on
Climate Change (ipcc) that global greenhouse gases will peak in the next 10-15 years and then be reduced to well
below half of 2000 levels by mid-century. This would happen if concentrations will stabilised at the lowest levels as assessed by ipcc."To achieve lowest stabilised levels, the Annex I parties would be required to reduce emissions by 25-40 per cent below
1990 levels by 2020, through means that may be available to them to reach emission reduction targets," the group concluded.
The workshop under the Convention Dialogue group focused on bringing together ideas from previous workshops and addressing cross-cutting issues,
including financing.
The two groups were established during the 11th Conference of Parties (cop 11) to the un
Framework Convention on Climate Change.
The present meet is being considered a successful step towards constructive negotiations on the post-2012 framework at cop 13, scheduled to take place from December 3-14, 2007 in Bali, Indonesia.
