us retail giant Wal Mart is involved in fraudulent and environmentally and socially harmful practices despite its claims of taking initiatives for sustainablity, says a report. Compiled by the Big Box Collaborative--a network of 23 labour, environment, public health and sustainable-community advocacy organizations--the report contends that the company's business model makes it inherently unsustainable.
Wal-Mart's Sustainability Initiative: A Civil Society Critique claims that the firm mislabels food produced using pesticides as organic, procures fish from fisheries with poor environmental records and engages in illegal logging and selling of toys made with phthalates and vinyl plastic. Contrary to Wal-Mart's claims of trying to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, it creates over 40 times the emissions it promises to eliminate.
