toronto , the largest city in Canada, will become a zero waste city by 2010, according to Mel Lastman, the city's mayor. Task Force 2010, set up for the purpose, will recommend a comprehensive waste diversion plan to Toronto City Council by June 2001, in consultation with the people of the city. "We need a plan that will be acceptable to everyone. By 2010, all our waste will be recycled, reused or composted," said Lastman. In 2000, Toronto's households generated at least 920,000 tonnes of waste. Seventy-six per cent of this waste was dumped in landfills and 24 per cent was recycled, composted or reused. The goal of the task force is 30 per cent diversion of the waste by 2003, 60 per cent by 2006 and 100 per cent by 2010.
