italy has wavered from its commitment to the Kyoto Protocol, jeopardising Europe's commitment to fight global warming. Italian officials have urged the European Union ( eu ) to acknowledge the fact that Kyoto is effectively dead without the us support. "The us participation is essential to achieve the ultimate objective of the un Climate Change Convention," assert the Italian officials.

Meanwhile, Denmark's parliament has approved the ratification of the Kyoto Protocol. In the 179-seat house, 88 voted in favour of ratifying the treaty, nine against, with three abstentions. The remaining 79 members of parliament were absent for the vote. Denmark's actual ratification of the treaty would take place along with the other European Union member states at a later date.
