Three years after adoption of SDGs, most countries have failed to implement them into real policies
Fundamental institutional and governance reforms are essential to achieve the 2030 Agenda — attaining the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) mandated by the United Nations —, according to a global civil society report.
The 17 SDGs, subdivided into targets, were adopted by all UN members in ’15. Three years after their adoption most countries, however, have failed to implement the 2030 Agenda into real policies, the Spotlight Report on Sustainbable Development 2019 found.
“Even worse, xenophobia and authoritarianism are on the rise in a growing number of countries,” stated the report.
“The implementation of the 2030 Agenda is not just a matter of better policies. It requires more holistic and more sweeping shifts in how power is vested, including through institutional and governance reforms,” the report added.
The report was launched during the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development at the UN Headquarters in New York, on July 9, 2019. It will be on till July 18 and will assess progress made on implementation SDG.
The report pressed the need for a structural transformation at the local and national level and strengthening of governance.
The report highlights the emerging global movements, notably by the youth and women, for social and environmental justice, challenging bad or inefficient government policies. It also emphasised the role of civil society organisations, which should act as independent watchdogs to hold governments and international organisations accountable.
