With the opening up of the Indian economy, photography has become an affordable hobby. Reflecting these changes, a slick new magazine Better Photography , has hit the stands.
Tata Donnelley, publishers of the magazine, "see it as a vehicle that would provide a big stimulus to the photography hobby in India". This wellprinted glossy offers tips on how to shoot flowers, photography in the rain, and a lot of other subjects.
Photographers have always drawn inspiration from nature and the magazine reflects this. From lions taking a cat-nap on a sunny afternoon in Africa to the rocks in the Seychelles, this magazine brings to the readers some of the most picturesque scenes from across the world.
In its first issue dated June 1997, the magazine featured eight of the "best landscape locations in India". On the list are upper Himachal Pradesh, Kerala's backwaters, the Nilgiris, Goa, Rajasthan, Mahabaleshwar and the Himalaya. But echoing concerns of environmentalists, the magazine hinted that increasing degradation of the environment is in some ways limiting the options for the photography fan.
The magazine also points out that hill stations are turning dirty, sections of the sea along the Indian coast is a dull grey and the disappearing greenery is disappointing photographers, who are concerned that they might be losing some of their best landscapes.
